Celta Vigo vs Valencia Preview

Celta Vigo and Valencia get ready to meet on match-day two after a summer which saw the clubs involved in a high profile part-exchange deal with Maxi Gomez and Santi Mina moving in opposite directions. As it turns out, we may see neither man start here with Mina currently injured while Gomez is likely to have to wait for his chance with Rodrigo Moreno and Kevin Gameiro set to be preferred in attack.

Valencia will feel as though they threw two points away on the opening weekend. They missed a late penalty to double their lead against Real Sociedad only to concede one at the other end with the Basques netting a 101st minute equaliser to deny Los Che an opening day win at the Mestalla. They should be able to field a stronger eleven here though with Dani Parejo and Jose Gaya available following suspensions.

Celta were beaten 3-1 at home by Real Madrid in their first game, all the more disappointing given they had a man advantage for a large chunk of it after Luke Modric’s red card. They’ve been busy in the summer window following a very poor 2018/19 season but Fran Escriba’s plans have been hampered by a few injury problems. They have concerns over the fitness of Hugo Mallo, Sergio Alvarez and Okay Yokuslu heading into this game.

This fixture will bring back happy memories for Valencia. They came to Balaidos with Marcelino under severe pressure in January and grabbed a vital win that sparked a run of just one defeat in 18 matches as Los Che turned their season around. There won’t be quite the same kind of pressure on them here but they will be desperate to avoid the slow start to last season which left them with a real scrap on to just get back into the European picture.

Celta Vigo vs Valencia Predictions

Score Prediction: 2-1 Valencia

Celta were a bit disappointing on the opening weekend in an admittedly tough fixture and a few injuries just seem to be preventing them from really wiping the slate clean from last term. Defensively they still look weak and with Dani Parejo back for Valencia, the visitors ought to fancy their chances of coming away with all the points from this game.
