Alaves vs Levante Preview
Alaves and Levante are two sides who can expect to be competing at around the same level this season which makes this an interesting opening weekend clash. It should tell us a little bit about where each of the two sides are at following reasonably successful seasons last time around.
It could have been a lot better for Alaves were it not for a late collapse which saw them fall out of European contention. They were widely seen to be punching above their weight though and it’s perhaps no surprise that Abelardo ultimately decided to move on after the club failed to meet his contract demands. Asier Garitano is an experienced top flight boss now but he was sacked by Real Sociedad after a mixed spell up the road in San Sebastian last term.
Levante meanwhile go again under Paco Lopez and they’ll be hoping for something similar to the opening weekend last term when they staged a real smash and grab to win 3-0 at Real Betis with some blistering counter-attacking football. That remains a real strength of theirs but they have looked to add a bit more all-round quality with Ruben Vezo, Gonzalo Melero, Sergio Leon, Oscar Duarte, Jorge Miramón, Hernâni and Carlos Clerc all signing permanent deals to join the Valencia club while Borja Mayoral returns on loan.
Alaves have also been very busy with a similar number of signings including the additions of Lucas Perez and Joselu to a much changed forward-line. They were always strong at the back under Abelardo and that shouldn’t change now another defensively-minded coach has come in and it’ll be interesting to see what kind of game develops here with Levante normally keen to draw the opposition onto them but break in numbers when the opportunity arises.

Alaves vs Levante Predictions
Score Prediction: 1-1 Draw
It’s tough to pick a winner here. Neither side are suffering from many injury problems but there will be selection headaches for both coaches as they decide how many of their new signings are worth a start. Although they play in a very different style, there is little to choose between the teams in terms of quality and a point apiece could be the outcome.
