Most pundits had the 1st Leg of this tie down as a really tight affair with little to choose between the sides during the regular season and the two meetings serving up low-scoring draws. Depor were averaging less than a goal per game in 2019 but they found their shooting boots in spectacular fashion on Wednesday night.

Despite twice falling behind with Javi Ontiveros instrumental for Malaga, they produced a terrific 2nd Half comeback to win 4-2 to the delight of the Riazor. That gives them a nice cushion to take to the Costa del Sol for the 2nd Leg of this tie as they aim to reach the play-off final and end Malaga’s hopes of an immediate return to the top flight.

Malaga had been in fine form heading into the play-offs. They’d reeled off four straight wins under their new boss Victor Sanchez. Every cliche in the book suggested they were the team that had timed their run well and were well placed to go on and secure promotion. They certainly started brightly in Galicia but a sloppy Second Half showing and in fairness plenty of quality from Depor leaves them with plenty to do here.

The visitors may consider switching to a more conservative approach but if they can find some of the quality in the final third they managed in midweek, they should be able to seal their place in the final against either Mallorca or Albacete.

Malaga vs Deportivo La Coruña Predictions

Score Prediction: 2-1 Malaga

This tie isn’t over just yet. We’ve seen some miraculous comebacks in the Segunda Division play-offs in recent years. Malaga will also take confidence from having scored 3 times in each of their last 3 home games, winning the lot and conceding a total of just one goal. However Depor will be a tougher proposition than some of those sides and they showed enough last time out to suggest they are well capable of scoring at La Rosaleda which would make it very tough for Malaga to progress.

Malaga vs Depor H2H

  • Last 6 meetings: 3 Depor Wins, 1 Malaga Win, 2 Draws.
  • Depor won the 1st Leg 4-2 in midweek at the Riazor.
  • The two league meetings this term produced 0-0 and 1-1 draws.
  • Depor are unbeaten in 4 games against Malaga overall heading into this.

One to Watch – Fede Cartabia

Cartabia was key in the 1st Leg, setting up two of Depor’s four goals. The Argentine certainly has some top flight qualities and he’s hungry to get back there.
