This is a fixture that feels like it belongs in the Primera Division and indeed was a top flight clash as recently as last season. At most only one of these teams wills be returning to the Primera though with bitter disappointment set to await the losers of this tie which commences in Galicia this Wednesday evening and concludes over 1,000 km away on the Costa del Sol on Saturday.

Malaga are unquestionably the form team. They head into the play-offs following five straight victories (includes an awarded 1-0 over now defunct Reus). To add to the spice, as if any were needed, the mastermind of the turnaround in form has been none other than former Depor player and coach Víctor Sánchez. He was only appointed Malaga boss in mid-April following the sacking of Juan Muñiz but has really hit the ground running steering the Andalusians to a 3rd place finish and the advantage of a home 2nd leg.

Depor have also ended the season pretty well though with their last 7 games producing 4 victories and only one defeat. They saw off Cordoba 2-0 in their final fixture at the weekend to ensure they pipped Cadiz and Oviedo to the final play-off spot. Depor also sacked their coach in April with José Luis Martí taking charge to steer them over the finish line and at least give them a shot at securing an immediate return to the top flight.

The winners of this tie will face either Mallorca or Albacete in the final to decide who the 20th and final participant in the 2019/20 Primera Division will be.

Deportivo La Coruña vs Malaga Predictions

Score Prediction: 0-0 Draw

There hasn’t been much to choose between the teams all season and this promises to be tight with so much at stake. Malaga are in great form but this will be a test of the progress they’ve made since the change in coach. They look capable of at least getting a result from the game which would give them the advantage heading into the 2nd Leg.
