There are 3 points separating these clubs heading into this Thursday’s clash in San Sebastian. Both sides have hit slightly iffy runs of form but neither are totally out of European contention. Certainly a victory for Betis would propel them back towards the fierce battle for 4th place which is brewing.
It hasn’t been a great 2019 so far for the Seville club though in truth. Their cup adventures ended with defeats in disappointing circumstances as the dream of a home Copa del Rey Final died a death against Valencia. They now can focus on La Liga but they’ve not been too consistent. A poor display barely merited a 1-1 draw away to Rayo Vallecano at the weekend and Quique Setien is expected to shuffle his pack quite considerably here.
Sociedad don’t have the same luxuries in terms of options if they wish to rotate. They’ve had a really tough run with key men getting injured at the same time. Striker Willian Jose may be fit enough to return here which is a boost but the likes of Diego Llorente and Asier Illarramendi remain injury doubts. The latter is key to how the side functions as a whole and it’s no coincidence that Sociedad have taken just 3 points from their last 5 games in his absence.
They could easily have lost at Valladolid at the weekend with a late VAR reprieve sparing them defeat although they did subsequently miss a great chance to win the game on the break. This will be a very different kind of game against pass masters Betis and it promises to be tight.
