This is the big one as far as fans of Getafe and Leganes are concerned. The South Madrid derby was only played in the top flight for the first time last season but there is a strong rivalry between these two clubs and it looks to be a top flight fixture that is here to stay. Geta are the clear favourites here but Lega would love to inflict some damage on their rivals’ surprise Champions League push.
These two teams tend to dubbed ‘long ball sides’. That’s not far from the truth in the case of Leganes. They do play a very direct style with Guido Carrillo up top holding the ball up. They are a very ‘big’ team with tall, physical players throughout the side which should make them pretty well suited for a derby clash. That said, they are yet to win any of their 3 top flight South Madrid derbies.
Getafe have a bit more craft and variety to their game. Their style has evolved since the start of last season when they did tend to be quite direct using Jorge Molina. The continued emergence of Jaime Mata has provided more diversity to their attack and they are scoring different types of goals now. Despite their defensive reputation, they are actually the joint 6th highest scorers in La Liga this term and they’ve been scoring for fun since the turn of the year.
They will fancy this but with 10 games to go, they can almost taste the Champions League now and that will bring its own pressures in the run-in. It would be a huge achievement if they can finish 4th and they look more than capable.
