This is a simply massive game for both clubs but particularly Celta Vigo. They are 4 points from safety heading into it with Villarreal the team directly above the drop-zone. Failure to get anything from this fixture would spell big trouble for the Galicians who are now coached by former Villarreal boss Fran Escriba.
He is their third coach of the season but so far the most successful has been Antonio Mohamed, whose early season sacking now looks like the wrong call. Celta have taken just 11 points from 16 games since sacking the Argentine. They’ve had an awful 2019 so far with the injury problems of Iago Aspas a large factor in that. The forward is training again but is not guaranteed to be fit enough to start this one. Celta have another huge game in midweek against Huesca and will need to have that in mind too with Aspas unlikely to be able to start both.
Villarreal were in every bit as much peril as Celta a few weeks back but 4 straight wins in all competitions has helped lift the gloom around the club. With 3 games over the next week, they have a chance to really move clear of danger, which would give them more freedom to focus their energies on their impressive Europa League run. Reappointing Javi Calleja seemed like a bizarre move at the time but so far it is paying off for them.
They certainly are the side with the momentum heading into this one and they have a chance to inflict a hammer blow on Celta’s survival hopes.
