STADIUM – Wanda Metropolitano

COMPETITION – La Liga

This is clearly the standout fixture this weekend in La Liga. It is also the second of many huge games taking place in Spain this month following the Clasico in midweek. Real Madrid got a creditable 1-1 draw there and will be targeting a first ever victory at the Wanda Metropolitano here. Last season’s meeting on this ground finished level and Atleti will be desperate to land the first blow in this rivalry at their new home, having traditionally struggled in Madrid derbies at the Calderon.

Atletico Madrid come into this game on the back of only their second defeat of the season. That came away at Betis last weekend as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat. It was a familiar tale really in that they didn’t do quite enough to test the opposition keeper and in terms of their title ambitions, they could really do with the win here given Barca are now 6 points clear.

Real Madrid will surely have to win if they are to stay in the race and they would at least move into 2nd with victory having rarely held a top two position this term. They played pretty well at Camp Nou, particularly in the first half hour when they got into positions to extend their lead. Vinicius and Lucas Vazquez have crept ahead of the likes of Gareth Bale and Marco Asensio in the pecking order up top. Their clasico showings cemented that, which would have been unthinkable at the start of the season.

To a large extent Santi Solari has been vindicated by those decisions. The results have been good of late but this will be a major test and they will need to be clinical here as chances are likely to be few and far between. At the other end, all eyes will be on Alvaro Morata in a huge game for the former Real Madrid striker. He hasn’t exactly been welcomed with open arms at the Wanda so will be hungry to prove a point.

Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid Predictions

Score Prediction: 0-0 Draw

Betting Tip: Draw @ 3.1 with Spin Palace Sports

Atleti’s clashes with Real Madrid and Barcelona in La Liga this term have been very cagey affairs. In truth, it’s hard to see this being any different. Los Blancos are likely to bring in Sergio Reguilon for Marcelo, who was very poor against Barca. That move should sure up their defence and they may look to play on the break. The sides of course know each other so well given the number of meetings there have been. They could well end up cancelling each other out again here.

Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid H2H

  • Last 6 meetings: 1 Atleti Win, 1 Real Win, 4 Draws (90 mins only).
  • The sides have met twice already this term with Atleti winning 4-2 in the UEFA Super Cup before a 0-0 draw at the Bernabeu.
  • Atleti have only won 1 home league derby in the 21st century.
  • The only previous meeting at the Wanda was a 0-0 draw last season.

One to Watch – Alvaro Morata

So much of the focus will be on Alvaro Morata here as he makes his home debut for Atleti against his old club. A goal in the Madrid derby would go a long way to winning over his doubters in the red and white half of Madrid.
