STADIUM – Butarque

COMPETITION – La Liga

#LeganesGetafe

There is more than one big derby taking place in Madrid this weekend. The Copa Libertadores Final 2nd Leg at the Bernabeu may generate more headlines. However the South Madrid derby on Friday night at Butarque is the one that matters to fans of Leganes and Getafe. This is only the third time they’ve met in the top flight and the Cucumbers are out to get one over on their near neighbours here having taken just a point from the meetings last term.

Both sides come into this in good form. Leganes are targeting a 4th straight win in all competitions. They won an away Madrid derby in midweek, seeing off Rayo Vallecano in the Copa del Rey and were impressive 4-2 winners at Valladolid last weekend in La Liga. They now look to have finally found a winning formula under Maurcio Pellegrino with opposing teams finding their back five very hard to break down. When they don’t have the ball it is a very flat line and they should be pretty well equipped to deal with a relatively direct Getafe side.

To give the visitors some credit, they’ve been trying to play a bit more ‘football’ this season. In fact they are actually the only team in Europa’s big five leagues yet to score from a set-piece. They now have genuine options up front, partly demonstrated as they put five past Cordoba with a rotated team in the Copa del Rey in midweek. It’s 5 wins and only 1 defeat from 8 for Getafe now and they would move into the top five with victory here.

Jose Bordalas still doesn’t really get the credit he deserves and the most striking thing this term has been how much better they’ve been away from home. That change started towards the back end of last season and with just 1 defeat in 12 competitive away games, they have every reason to fancy their chances here. It will be a real test for an improving Leganes and a tight game looks likely.

Leganes vs Getafe Predictions

Score Prediction: 0-0 Draw

Both sides have found some form in the final third of late but in a big derby game, Leganes and Getafe are more likely to revert back to their more naturally cautious styles. With Leganes only having lost once at home this term, they should get something from the game despite Getafe’s strong away record. It’s likely to be very competitive and don’t be surprised if there’s a red card here but a draw looks the most likely outcome.

Leganes vs Getafe H2H

  • Last 6 meetings: 2 Leganes Wins, 2 Getafe Wins, 2 Draws.
  • The first ever top flight meetings took place last season with Getafe winning 2-1 here and drawing 0-0 at home.
  • Getafe have only lost on 1 of their 4 visits to Butarque this century.
  • However Leganes have won 4 of the 9 meetings since the year 2000 overall, losing only 3.

One to Watch – Guido Carrillo

Guido Carrillo is putting his miserable spell in the Premier League behind him. Leganes are using him as the target of most of their attacks and he is doing a great job of holding up the ball while chipping in with some valuable goals.
