The wait for the return of La Liga ends on Friday night with a game that may not sound the most appetising but is a pretty significant one in terms of what it could mean for the table. A win for Alaves would see them move above Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla and retake top spot heading into the weekend. Leganes meanwhile would move out of the drop-zone with a point, which would see Athletic Bilbao slip into the bottom three.
While they may be at opposing ends of the division, this still promises to be a very even game. Leganes have been solid at home this season, only losing once. They’ve already beaten Barcelona and drawn with Atletico Madrid at Butarque. They were widely tipped to go down but Mauricio Pellegrino has managed to maintain those solid foundations and will know that home form is going to be key to their survival prospects.
Alaves would also have started the season with survival as their primary goal but already they should be re-evaluating those ambitions. They already have 23 points, more than the bottom two sides mustered in all of last season and with the likes of Villarreal and Valencia struggling, a European challenge may not be out of the question.
The Basque side have really improved their away record in recent times, winning 6 of their last 10 on the road in La Liga. They’d won just 3 in 16 on the road prior to that and Abelardo’s men have already won a Friday night fixture this season when the prize on offer was top spot in La Liga. They’ll fancy they can repeat the trick here but it won’t be easy against a Leganes side who were unfortunate not to win last time out at Girona.

Score Prediction: 1-1 Draw
This one is too tight to call. After an unconvincing start, Leganes are starting to look like a team that is capable of scrapping for every point and perhaps doing just enough to maintain their top flight status again. It’s hard to see them getting turned over often at Butarque but they’ll struggle to create much against a disciplined Alaves side so a low-scoring draw looks a likely outcome here.
